Throughout this journey up until the age of 26, I was living a life with a mask on. It is a common thread for many people, it has been brought forward with my clients, family, friends, coworkers, and strangers. It's easy to do, put the smile on and portray a perfect life, when inside you are feeling terrible and suffering. This is a root of societal beliefs of how life should look like; the princess and prince charming fairy tale.
Life is not always perfect. It is not meant to be, that is how we learn, grow, and discover.
However, life does become easier when you take the time for you, for your happiness and well-being. According to the oxford dictionary, self-love is defined as the “regard for one's own well-being and happiness (chiefly considered as a desirable rather than narcissistic characteristic).” Loving yourself is not conceited. Doing what is best for you, saying no thank you when it is not right for you is not conceited, it is honouring and having love for yourself.
Love is acceptance, kindness, encouragements, and caring. Conceit is excessive pride in oneself, thinking a person is better than another, and in thoughts and words is determined to prove it. When you have love for yourself, doubts disappear, fears fade, and a comfort develops that even when you’re alone becomes a place of solace.
Once you are able to give yourself the gift of releasing self-judgement and the worry of judgement coming in by others, you will feel so free and your self-esteem with continue to improve drastically. Self-esteem goes hand-in-hand with self-love. As one grows, so does the other.
Remove your mask, live the life you love and want to live, and honour yourself by giving yourself time for your happiness and well-being.
